History
On
September 9th, 2003 Microsoft donated a pool of desktop and
handheld personal computers to the Women in CS in the Department of Computer Science
and Engineering (CSE) at The Ohio State University (OSU). These resources
formed the foundation of a The Women In Computer Engineering (TWiCE), where women would develop
applications utilizing Visual Studio.NET.
AU03 - TWiCE Launch
 |
Equipment: The equipment and supporting printed material
was ordered and
started arriving. |
 |
Physical Plant: The CSE department and Systems Operation Center
generously donated floor space and system support. Equipment was installed into the
space. |
 |
Human Resources: Provisional team members were recruited. A
development plan that included weekly assignments was created. Team
members began configuring and using lab resources. |
 |
Client Development: Favorable contact
was initiated with viable industry client projects, like FamilyPal,
COTA, and Olentangy Local Schools |
WI04 - Growth
 |
Technical Resources: Server hardware was
installed and configured. |
 |
Human Resources: Team members completed their orientation activities and
submitted project plans for development. Additional members were
recruited. One member graduated. |
 |
Projects: After pruning the client list for viability, one external
client, COTA, was selected. Contracted work for COTA began. Other
activities included assisting with a pilot section of CIS201 and
targeted applications for general use by middle and high school math and
science classes |
SP04 - Maturity
 |
Technical Resources: Server software was installed and a Sharepoint
site was
created for the coordination of team activities and resources.
|
 |
Projects: Activity on Jane's Domaze, a proposed application for handheld
PCs to introduce object-oriented topics to middle and high school
students, was accelerated. The TWiCE website was redesigned to
make a more effective communication tool. |
Present
 |
Technical Resources: The
lab PCs support 1-2 TWiCE members each. The server is running a
Sharepoint site and hosting the Gidget
website. |
 |
Human Resources: The
project supports up to ten women at a time, with members joining and leaving
every quarter. We are proud that 100% of TWiCE participants stay in
their computing major until graduation. |
 |
Client Development: We
have active partnerships with TECHCORPS Ohio and Gidget. |
Our lab is a clean, safe space for TWiCE members to
work on projects or schoolwork:
